Founder
Matthew Schubert is an electronics engineer and physicist who has spent twenty years designing and building instrumentation. He has worked in a number of industries, and the common thread has been developing systems that deliver useful, timely and accurate information in challenging environments.

His first decade was spent in train and rail inspection. He built systems that rode on dedicated road/rail vehicles, using high speed machine vision and large magnetic sensor arrays to measure rail profile, surface cracking and overhead wire condition. Other systems sat permanently trackside, tracking each train as it rolled through to measure wheel profiles around their full circumference, monitor pantograph wear and build full-colour 3D point clouds of the vehicles. Much of that work meant introducing tooling and signal processing techniques that made products out of measurements the industry had considered unfeasible. Those products remain in service with rail operators around the world.
The decade since has been spent downhole. He designed the hardware for a slimline nuclear magnetic resonance wireline probe along with the firmware and processing library that let clients accurately measure formation porosity and permeability a kilometre underground. He went on to build a measurement-while-drilling sub that took spectral gamma, survey and drilling dynamics measurements directly behind the percussive hammer in a reverse circulation drill string, as well as a complementary drill rig monitoring system. These instruments underwent rigorous field trials on active wireline units and drill rigs in northern Western Australia and are currently used by customers worldwide.
Every one of those systems had to move information from the sensor through to the person acting on it. That meant gateware and firmware to capture it, processing algorithms to turn raw signals into answers, cloud platforms to deliver it off the vehicle or the rig, databases and geospatial stores to manage it, and visualisation to make it legible. He has worked at every stage, from bare metal to the cloud, so any part he develops accounts for everything around it.
Alongside the engineering he has built and led teams. As Head of Engineering at Advanced Logic Technology he took over technical management from the founder, built up a new team and reignited innovation. He championed a foundational cloud and edge data platform, developed a downhole battery/memory system to open up new markets for the company's wireline instrumentation, and led its part in an EU funded consortium building a geothermal grade borehole radar. He was also the company's primary technical authority through its €55M+ sale to IMDEX Australia.
He started Ioces in Australia in 2020 and has picked it up again in Luxembourg. The company exists to keep solving hard measurement problems, whatever industry they turn up in. He works with clients worldwide, and is happy to talk through a problem long before there is a concrete project.

FAQ
How do you pronounce "Ioces"?
It is pronounced "EYE-oh-seez" (phonetically written as /ˈaɪəʊsiːz/). Think of it as three simple everyday words spoken quickly together: Eye + Oh + Seas.
What does it mean?
Nothing at all. It came out of some experimentation with Markov chains and domain availability, looking for something short, catchy and recognisable that still had a .com free.
Why are there two Ioces entities?
Ioces SA in Luxembourg is the active entity, and generally the one you'd be working with. Ioces Pty Ltd in Australia is where the company started back in 2020 and is still registered, but dormant. It may be reactivated in the future if the need arises.
What industries do you work in?
Most of our experience is in train and rail inspection and downhole geophysical instrumentation, but we're expanding into other sectors. Our specialisation is measurement in technically challenging environments, not any one industry.
Do I need a fully scoped project before reaching out?
Not at all. Some of the most useful conversations happen well before a project has taken shape, so reach out even if all you have is a problem or an idea.
Do you work with clients remotely?
Of course. We're comfortable with remote work, and have plenty of experience collaborating with client teams around the world. Most projects end up needing a mix of remote, on-site and in-person work, so we make sure we're flexible when it comes to travel.
